Christmas Eve was the usual unbridled insanity, but for once, we didn’t need to be anywhere on Christmas Day. I’m going to spend the afternoon taped to the couch, subsisting on cold leftovers and endless airings of A Christmas Story. Just the way it ought to be.
I hope you’re having a good one, filled with whatever you wanted it to be filled with.
Here’s a video examining some of the more interesting presents I received this year, from Oreo cookies to skull-shaped liquor decanters:
If I sound groggy, it’s because I am. Merry Xmas!

I’m posting from my new Xmas present. I only got one thing: an Android netbook! Just what I wanted; no more having to share a computer!
If anyone can help with info about rooting an android-powered Netbook, let me know.
Merry Christmas.
From my Dino Drac secret Santa (Jason), I got a great Punisher action figure, some Walking Dead trading cards, some Wacky Packages cards (I haven’t seen those things in years!), a card, and some candy. Thanks, Jason!
My parents, as usual, spoiled me:
Books:
11/22/63 – Stephen King
Electric Barracuda – Tim Dorsey
Two Bibles, one for church (my old one was falling apart) and another, smaller one I wanted.
DVDs:
The Weird Al Show
The Simpsons – Season 15
The Avengers on Blu-ray
The Amazing Spider-Man on Blu-ray
The Dark Knight Trilogy on Blu-ray
CDs:
Babel (Deluxe Edition) – Mumford & Sons
The World From the Side of the Moon – Phillip Phillips
They also gave me a Playstation 3.
It’s been a good Christmas. Thanks for the video, Matt. You got a great haul, as always. Has anyone mentioned that Dan Aykroyd makes that skull vodka?
I hope everyone else had a merry Christmas!
I have a story involving me, Dan Aykroyd and that vodka. I’m serious.
Also, that gun thing TOTALLY ripped off ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’…or vice versa.
Merry Christmas Matt and XEers! Thanks for posting your haul, Matt…I’d even love to see more, even the smallest items
I did kick ass this year but a lot of it is girly shit I don’t think anyone wants to hear the details of LOL. BUT the thing that blew me away was my Dad’s surprise gift of a white gold, peridot, sapphire, and ruby pendant he had made for me to commemorate my engineering company I opened this year (I own a roller coaster/theme park engineering firm). He wrote a heartfelt story to go with it about my journey to finally owning this business and three lines into it I was a MESS. I still can’t write about it without tearing up. Dad of the YEAR 2012. This was after he gave me (again, total surprise) a hat he had signed by three current and veteran Red Wings players. I was completely speechless!!!!
Always been a fan of drunken/hungover rants, regardless of where they come from. The fact that it came from this site made it that much better…….pretty psyched about one of my gifts I got…..my family knows my affinity to really kind of treat my inner child really decent, and they managed to snag one figure off eBay that I always wanted but eluded me as a kid….Jaga from the original Thundercats line, complete with sword, cape, and helmet. Yup, he is just as cool as I’d imagined growing up!!!
I’ve been meaning to grab some of that Crystal Head Vodka as soon as I some extra cash, because 1st off, who doesn’t want a glass human skull, and 2nd, vodka is my weapon of choice when in the mood to assault my liver. Win win!!
Here’s my haul this year:
Muddy Waters and Rolling Stones DVD/CD
Led Zeppelin Celebration Day DVD/CD
Ted DVD
Hot Tub Time Machine DVD
Skyrim for PS3 (I can already tell this will take over my life for the next 6 months or so)
New dress shoes
Fire pit for the backyard
LOTS of socks and boxers
Denver Broncos ballcap
“Killing Kennedy” book
Buddy Guy autobiography
Batcave LEGO set
Batmobile LEGO set
Couple of tshirts
Itunes card
Jbuds earbuds
Batman hoodie
My mom once again takes the prize for the WTF gift: she got me a shirt that says “I’ve got da nuts” on the front, and “Hellloooo Ladies!” on the back. It’s gloriously weird. My mom is good for at least one gift every year that makes me wonder if she was smoking PCP before she shopped for me.
Merry Christmas, Matt, and congrats on your first holiday season with Dinosaur Dracula! I enjoyed reading, and for the first time in awhile, had a really enjoyable holiday this year, complete with great food and swag from family. Hope you had fun and thanks for keeping things Christmassy around here.
pause….my brother gave me Mr Magoo’s Christmas Carol, the GREATEST Christmas movie of all time and I say that without any exageration whatsoever.
I weep for the old shoes but I have a terrible habit of putting sentimental value on everything I have ever owned. “Oh, I can’t throw that paper cup away, that’s the one I was using to drink Mint Ginger Ale and Bourbon at 9 o’clock in the morning the day after Christmas while I watched Matt show off his Gift haul for 2012.”
Completely snowed in and playing my new video games, life is good.
I’ve been following your blogs (x-entertainment) for probably ten years or so now, and I never knew what you look like.
I approve. WINGED PIG!!!
Oh, my haul thus far (presents tonight and this weekend from other people):
New record player & speakers
Tom Waits’ Blood Money on vinyl
The Clash’s Give Em Enough Rope on vinyl
I’ll be combining my birthday/Christmas gifts:
$200 cash
Talking Digital Bank
Dark Knight Rises on Blu-Ray
A USB light-up snowman
A jacket
Batman and Robin socks
One of those all-in-one flashlights that contains a radio among other stuff on it
Recognized that Bibo right away. I wanted that damned clock so bad, but back in Archie McPhee’s heyday I was too young to buy my own mail-order things and too self-conscious to ask for a creepy Korean alien clock.
And goddamn it, now I want a mushy-faced clay man too. I woke up this morning not knowing it existed, but now that I do I must have it.
And hey, my X-Mas haul… wasn’t so much a haul. I’m getting too old to just buy random dollar-store toys for (as far as my relatives know), so now I get specific things I suggest.
-Kindle eReader eBook eDoohickey
-Two pairs of nice jeans, which was the exact amount I needed.
-One of those gift boxes with sausages and crackers… seriously, that was the first ever time I actually received one as a gift. And I legitimately loved it. Didn’t come with a tiny meat cleaver… do they even make those anymore? Please tell me they do.
-A book. Just a book I wanted, who cares what it was besides me?
-Other Non-Specific Stuff, including but not limited to a frog made out of seashells with a cigar in its mouth.
@Andrea
Props for being the other person here who got vinyl, and for excellent taste. I myself got Rope as a brilliant birthday present for me a few years back from the best person I ever knew in my life (along with T. Rex’s The Slider). Blood Money was one of my first ever self-purchases (on vinyl, I mean), for that matter.
Since this blog should pretty much get official endorsement from Target at this point anyway: if you are having any trouble with shelving records, there are these delightfully perfect-sized plastic cubes they have there. Tough, thick plastic that can actually manage the weight of a reasonable number of records. And shelves, too, which can increase stability if treated as dividers instead by turning the things sideways.
I found one of those Nutcracker Crunch candles on clearance today. Holy crap. I must find more of them.
I got socks. Just what I needed, actually.
Man those sneakers need a decent burial. Someone who can draw out there needs to create a Matt cartoon strip about the story about bringing the bibo clock to high school.
I got all shirts and ties. Seriously. And I’m oddly happy about it. Wish I could have a fun Christmas again.
Now that I think about it, I carried something around with me in high school too that was a bit odd. The first Simpsons episode guide. I read through it when I had some time to kill. I know once during finals I didn’t have to go to one. So I sat there for about an hour and a half looking at it.
So you DO know how to tie your shoes now!
Oh no, I don’t. And it’s an issue.
There are helpful tutorials on the web. I figured it out eventually, it’s not too bad.
I tried some of that skull vodka one time and it almost blew my head off. I had heartburn for like a week.
I have about a half bottle of the skull vodka sitting on my shelf. Can’t stand the stuff but it was too expensive to pour out. Just waiting for someone finish it off.
My mom spoils me.
- Wii U (our Wii broke down after one too many cats vomited into the vents)
- Kindle Fire (I asked for an ereader…apparently my cousin the tech genius said this one is the best…I have no way of knowing if that’s true, but it’s pretty freaking awesome!)
- Futurama season 6
- My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic season 1
- Twilight Sparkle toy (Mom intended to get the one on my amazon wishlist…this one’s even cuter!)
- Joan Jett and the Blackhearts truck. This requires a bit of explanation – basically, I wasn’t feeling this year’s Hess truck (It’s NOT A TRUCK when it’s a helicopter, okay?) so she got me this one instead. It’s pretty badass.
- More jewelry that I will probably never wear, but is lovely.
- Beatrix Potter DVD set. I gotta be honest, I have no clue what this is. But my mom informed me that the complete works book was too damn heavy to carry home, so I got this instead.
- Children’s books from a series that I collect.
- Beauty products that I will never use (I finally got her to stop giving me handbags I will never use. This has taken its place. At least these are easy to regift. I appreciate the gesture, though I sometimes wonder if she’s trying to communicate that she thinks I’m a mess.)
- Stuffed animals, because I’m five.
- Tokidoki blind box pegacorn (one I already had, but you can never have too many!)
Probably other things I’m forgetting. I always feel bad about how much she spends. Sigh. Love my mom. Wish she wasn’t so impossible to shop for…I can’t compete!
Did well myself,
My family chipped in and got me an iPad 3, which I wanted but didn’t ask for. They just knew.
My brother sprung for a 3DS XL – I have eye problems so the bigger screen is fantastic.
I got a few related gifts – games for 3DS, a cover for the iPad, ect.
My brother also got me a Mega Blox WoW set.
I gave better though.
My brother got a GeekyHockey.com Zelda hockey jersey – green brown and white like Link’s tunic, with a big Zelda crest in the center, with his Name and Number on the back.
Then the big thing was for mom and dad. Their TV has been failing for ages. So my brother and I got them a brand new 3DTV – 47″. They never saw it coming.
I’m thrilled with how Christmas ended up this year.
I am late but this is what I got for Xmas.
Can see that tumbleweed rolling by.
Absolutely nothing.
However Yuletide was better to me, I got 50.00 for Toys R Us which is going on Battle Beasts when they get released, Suicide Squad – Kicked in the Teeth GN, 3 Terry’s Chocolate Oranges, Fraggle Rock Season 1 DVD. Didn’t make out like a Bandit this year as money was tight.
Oh I almost forgot my Mums gift to me Starfleet – X-Bomber DVD and OMFG! October Toys Series 2.
Have added a few more things to my rather dull list that I bought for myself with money from relatives or gift cards:
- Socks and women’s underthings. (Ok, not exciting, but I needed them. My dad’s drier ate my last pair of white socks.)
- A WebKinz Rockerz stuffed animal that comes with an online code. Most of them are ugly, but I kinda liked the pink and black-striped cat in the checkered tie.
- Fairie Tale Theatre: The Complete Series
- Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman The Complete First Season
- An Ice Age Christmas Special (My little nephew got me into the “Ice Age” movies this fall.)
- Julie’s Cooking Studio (American Girl 70s-themed cookbook – anyone for pizza fondue?)
- Maytime Warner Archive DVD
- A cute little Christmas-themed snow globe that lights up and $20 from an aunt
- That’s Entertainment: Treasures From the Vault (lots of random “making of” documentaries on the three “That’s Entertainment” films, and more to the point, a “musical jukebox” of 12 numbers that were cut from various MGM films and unearthed for the DVD)
Too much to mention this year from all of the families but here are the highlights:
-Golden Sun: The Lost Age in box with all of the inserts
-Metroid Prime Trilogy
-Super Game Boy
-Kid Icarus (NES)
-New Super Mario Bros. 2
-Fortune Street
-Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2
-Some Atari VCS games
-Some out-of-print Jeeves and Wooster books
-A Christmas light fixing gun
-Mega Man graphic novel (1st volume)
-Ornaments (Wrigley Field, etc.)
-DVDs (Doug Season 1, Retro Game Master)
-Amazon gift cards
-Zelda 2013 Calendar
-Link’s Shield (life size repro to match my Master Sword)
-CDs (Rush’s newest, Muppets Christmas, Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack)
-Santa’s Favorites Anise Flavored Cookies (can’t get them here, only in the midwest)
I know that I am a bit late with this,Merry Christmas!! I am glad you got cool gifts. I don’t want to talk about my Christmas, other than to say I might go somewhere else next year. If you need someone to help with your shoes I would be more than glad to.
That crystal head vodka is made in my home town!
I gave my sister a bottle of Crystal Head vodka for Christmas – signed by Dan Akroyd!
