Empire of the Ants!

Just got back from seeing Ant-Man and the Wasp, which I really enjoyed. It’s a small movie by MCU standards, but that’s kind of the point. Tight story, great casting, and it has just enough ties to the “bigger ideas” for it not to exist in a bubble. Totally worth seeing.

That movie inspired tonight’s pick, obviously:

Here’s Empire of the Ants, from 1977. Named after H.G. Wells’s short story but only partially based on it, this is a bad movie by objective measures, but one I love all the same.

I rented this on video way back when, probably because it was classified as a “sci-fi” rather than a “horror” movie — and thus shelved in the same vicinity as Star Wars. I have such fond memories of watching this silly movie during long, summer nights. I guess it’s mostly famous for being bad, but it’s still about giant killer ants, and that was enough to guarantee repeat rentals.

PS: Yes, that’s Joan Collins in there.
