Pluto’s Christmas Tree!
If I did things correctly, this should post automatically at night, LIKE MAGIC.
(By the time anyone reads this, I’ll be out drinking tequila. Which is just what the doctor ordered, frankly.)
Here’s one of my favorite Disney shorts, and definitely my favorite Christmassy one.
Pluto’s Christmas Tree, from 1952, more properly belongs to Chip and Dale, who infiltrate Mickey’s humble abode to marvel at his awesome holiday decorations.
The shots of the chipmunks wandering around the tree’s decorated branches RULED MY WORLD as a kid, and still does. It’s because of this short that I adopted a childhood tradition of taking a few cookies and action figures to go lay directly under our family’s Christmas tree, and just stare upward for an hour while using plastic Star Wars characters as my surrogate Disney rodents.
Enjoy. For me, it just isn’t Christmas without this silly cartoon.
In other news, we got our first snowstorm last night. Well, “storm” may be overstating the case, but we got enough snow for me to make my first and potentially only snowball of the season.
It’s the little things.
Rudolph, yo.
Exactly one week from now, I’ll be wrapping the last of the presents and preparing for Christmas Eve. My God, this season just flew by. Better check off one of the major holiday specials before it’s too late. Heeeeeere’s Rudolph!
Rankin/Bass’s Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a true Christmas classic, and one of the few specials that still gets an annual slot on prime time television. (At least, I’m assuming it does. I’ve become pretty awful about keeping up with holiday specials on TV, which is literally the thing I hate most about me right now.)
Random Rudolph confessions:
1. I’ve always liked this special but it was never even close to my favorite. Part of this is because I felt horrible for Rudolph and didn’t particularly enjoy feeling that way, happy ending notwithstanding.
2. Remember the gym teacher from The Wonder Years? He used to remind me so much of the reindeer coach from this special.
3. Bumble may be responsible for kicking off my almost lifelong fascination with yetis.
Disney’s Christmas Fantasy on Ice!
Well, this looks oddly promising. Disney’s Christmas Fantasy on Ice aired on CBS back in 1992, and it’s exactly what you think: Lots of ice skating, and lots of costumed Disney characters.
Did I mention that it also stars Bronson Pinchot of Perfect Strangers fame? Because there’s that.
Batman Returns SNES Playthrough!
Here’s a playthrough of Batman Returns for the Super Nintendo. I don’t know, it just seemed interesting.
As we mentioned on the latest Purple Stuff Podcast, Batman Returns is very much a Christmas movie, so I feel totally justified in tonight’s viewing choice.
(Never played this game, btw. Was it any good? It sure LOOKS good, anyway.)
