Dino Drac After Dark

Garfield’s Halloween Safety Tips!

Some of the videos I’ll be featuring on After Dark this season won’t be especially long, but I think that’s fine? I mean, most of you can’t devote that much time to weird movies on weeknights anyway. Working in some quicker hits makes sense.

With that in mind, here’s another great suggestion from LibraryLeia. Can’t believe I’ve never seen this before! Get a load of Garfield’s Halloween Safety Tips, a Green Cross PSA from way back in ‘85.

(…which means that it debuted the same year as Garfield’s Halloween Adventure, even if the Garfield in this PSA look much more “vintage.”)

LibraryLeia adds: “Everything was so much ‘scarier’ in the ’80’s. There was Satanic Panic, the potential for drugs and razor blades in our Halloween candy, stranger danger and drug dealers around every corner. (Or at least it seemed that way at the time.) I guess that’s why we had so many safety videos. Good thing Gar-Halloween-field was there to help us out!”

Such a cool find!

PS: I’ve been working on a video all day, which is why there was no main page update. I’d hoped to get it done and published in the same day, but damn, even the simpler videos can take serious time! It’ll be up tomorrow, though, so look for it then.

Friday the 13th: The Series!

Here’s a great pick from Ginyu Recoome, which matches up well with all of the rain we’ve gotten around here today…

It’s another episode of Friday the 13th: The Series, boosted by the inclusion of all of its original TV commercials! Assuming this is a recording of the episode’s first broadcast, that’d make it from 1988.

The specific ep is called Tales from the Undead. Here’s the synopsis from IMDB: “Ryan believes that a half-man, half-monster comic-book hero has come to life and is responsible for the murder of a shopkeeper.”

The video is a bit fuzzy, but just consider that part of its charm.

PS: Just wanna remind those of you visiting on your phones that the Halloween Jukebox now works on mobile. Listen to it wherever you are!

Super Mario meets Elvira!

HAPPY SEPTEMBER! Kinda crept up on us, didn’t it?

Tonight’s video is on the short side, but you won’t hold that against it:

Suggested by Keith, here’s Elvira’s appearance on The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, from 1989. (Actually, this was the second of Elvira’s appearances on that series, which is amazing to think about.)

PS: So much of that series is lowkey great for the Halloween season. If you have the DVD set or can find it streaming, consider running a custom marathon this year. Just off the top of my head, I remember guests including everyone from Ernie Hudson to a random vampire.

Commander USA: Mausoleum!

Thanks everyone for helping to make the launch of this year’s Halloween Countdown such a success! Looking forward to spending the next two months with you guys.

Did some hunting today and finally found that spooky Mountain Dew, so I’ll be able to review that — among other things — next week.

Tonight’s video was suggested by LibraryLeia, and it’s a doozy. Get ready for the Commander USA broadcast of MAUSOLEUM, complete with all of the original TV spots!

If you’ve never seen Mausoleum — which had awesome VHS art, btw — here’s the synopsis from Google: “A man asks a psychiatrist to help his wife, who is cursed to share her body with a demon.”

The movie is super on-point for the season, but the video is worth watching even just for the old commercials. Enjoy!
