Think back to when you were a kid, getting presents for whatever your family celebrated in December.
Name a gift you received that seemed boring and lousy when you opened it, but ended up becoming a major fave.
Mine would have to be this old Donkey Kong 3 handheld game. It was objectively neither boring nor lousy, but it was a terrible replacement for what I was really after that year: The then-new Nintendo Game Boy.
I considered it my sworn duty to avoid playing it out of petty spite, but once I cracked, I immediately fell in love. I couldn’t get over how that teensy little electronic game had its own controllers. Christmas was saved.
Thanksgiving 1991 Commercials!
Here’s a bunch of TV commercials that aired on Thanksgiving back in 1991…
There are a couple of gems in the mix — including that singalong spot for the Home Alone video. (God, even I forgot that one!)
Try to keep the context in mind while watching these. Back in ’91, you would’ve ideally seen them on a very fully belly while hiding from the relatives in the TV room.
Garfield’s Thanksgiving!
I think we’re close enough to Thanksgiving to run this one…
Here’s Garfield’s Thanksgiving… again! (Look, for as long as Dino Drac After Dark exists, I’m gonna toss this up every November.)
Okay, so maybe it’s not quite as good as Garf’s Halloween and Christmas specials, but I still love it. I love anything that features Grandma Arbuckle, basically.
Q*Bert’s Thanksgiving Special?
Here’s Thanksgiving for the Memories, starring Q*Bert!
It’s a short from the old Saturday Supercade cartoon. Looks like it premiered on November 26th, 1983. (I don’t doubt that I’ve run this on After Dark before, but something this strange deserves to be shared twice!)
