Chilling Challenge! (#5)

This week’s Chilling Challenge is an easy one, but I think you’ll enjoy it!

One of my favorite pastimes is looking over the trivia sections on IMDB. I can easily spend hours doing that, researching movies I’ve seen, movies I want to see, and movies I know I’ll never see.

So let’s take a hint from that. Search through IMDB, and report back with an interesting trivia tidbit about a movie, show or TV special. Obviously, the trivia should be about Halloweeny movies and shows!

You can do up to 3 different trivia tidbits, if you like. I’ll start:

Friday the 13th Part III:
In the original ending, Chris rows back to shore and begins walking towards the house. She suddenly hears a noise from the house, and thinking it’s Rick, begins to run to the porch of the house. Once she arrives at the front door, it suddenly bursts open and Jason emerges, to the surprise of Chris. Jason then grabs Chris by the hair and chops her head off with a machete.

It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown:
When writing a letter to the Great Pumpkin, Linus states, “You must get discouraged because more people believe in Santa Claus than in you. Well, let’s face it; Santa Claus has had more publicity, but being #2, perhaps you try harder.” This is a reference to an advertising slogan for Avis Rent-a-Car that was well known in the 1960s.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3:
At around the 38 minute mark, Jennifer (Penelope Sudrow) is watching the movie Critters.

Your turn! Search IMDB for interesting pieces of trivia about movies, shows or TV specials with some tie to the Halloween season. Report back with your findings!

Frightening Free-For-All Thread! (#4)

Goblins and ghouls! Dino Drac After Dark just got its weekly injection of doom and gloom. When you’re done here, check out this week’s Sinister Survey, Macabre Movies of the Week and Chilling Challenge!

This is your Frightening Free-For-All Thread. Chat about whatever, all week long!

Sinister Survey! (#4)

For this week’s Sinister Survey, all ya gotta do is share a happy Halloween memory.

Can be from when you were a kid. Can be from last year. Can be about something that happened on Halloween proper, or just something that took place during the season. The only rule is that it’s gotta be a happy memory for you!

Here’s one of mine:

Every year, we’re extra generous with the trick-or-treaters. It’s easy to do, because after spending two months writing about Halloween candy, I’m left with more than I could/should eat. When the kids come knocking, they always get a bunch of stuff.

But one year in particular — I’m guessing this was in 2008, or somewhere around then — we spent the night before Halloween building killer goodie bags STUFFED with candies, little toys, stickers and other things. A whole dang grab bag of stuff, for every creature of the night.

We didn’t get very many trick-or-treaters that year, but the ones who knocked couldn’t believe their luck. Virtually all of them gasped as we handed over those big Ziploc bags. Given that I can still remember which houses gave me two Blow Pops over thirty years ago, I have no doubt that we created many lasting memories that day.

Your turn! Share a happy Halloween memory, in the comments!

Macabre Movies of the Week! (#4)

I think it’s time to break out the big guns — or at least the fat cats. Settle in for the Macabre Movies of the Week!

Yep, we’re going there. It’s a tradition to run Garfield’s Halloween Adventure during After Dark’s spooky season, so hey, why not now? Since this is an official upload from Garfield’s peeps, the video quality is top-notch.

I mentioned this in a recent article, so it seemed like a natural fit for After Dark. Scream Greats: Satanism and Witchcraft is a direct-to-VHS documentary about Hollywood’s fascination with the occult… and the “real life” equivalents of the stuff we saw on the big screen.

I’ve heard that it’s ridiculous if taken seriously, but I’m positive that the entertainment value is off the charts. (I’ll be watching this one tonight, btw!)

From the Halloween on Ice TV special in 1998, get a load of an ICE SKATING FREDDY KRUEGER! This is exactly the kind of cheese that’ll put your mind at ease, even if only for a few minutes.

Enjoy the vids, guys. If you want to check out the previous Macabre Movies of the Week, click here.
